Landing Matters: Mats, Padding, and Platforms for Safer Ninja Gyms
Posted by DGS Ninja on Mar 13th 2026
In ninja training, falling is part of learning. A well-designed landing system doesn’t eliminate falls, it prepares for them. If you’re designing or upgrading a ninja space, landing safety should be one of the first things you plan, not the last.
The right combination of mats, padding, and platforms reduces injury risk, builds confidence, and allows athletes to train consistently over time.
Why Landing Safety Comes First
Athletes jump, swing, lache, miss grips, and peel off, especially while learning new skills. Proper landing areas help reduce impact forces, prevent injuries, and allow athletes to train harder without hesitation.
When athletes trust the landing, they’re more willing to try, fail, and improve.
That trust starts with what’s underneath them.
Start With a Solid Foundation
Before obstacles go up, consider what’s covering your floor.
A base layer of carpet bonded foam (CBF) provides consistent impact absorption across the entire training area. It helps reduce harsh transitions between landing zones and adds protection for unexpected falls outside of primary mat areas.
CBF also allows mats and foam blocks to connect with hook and loop fasteners, helping keep everything securely in place. This minimizes shifting, separation, and gaps, an important detail for both safety and daily maintenance in a busy gym.
Think of CBF as the foundation layer that supports your entire landing system.

Crash Pads: Your Primary Landing Surface
Crash pad-style landing mats should be the core of your setup.
These are the main mats under obstacles, rig bays, and dismount zones. For most ninja applications, mats with 8 inches of foam thickness at minimum is recommended to properly absorb impact from swings, jumps, and missed grips. For a reliable safety baseline, follow the "1-inch per foot" rule: 1 inch of mat thickness for every 1 foot of potential fall height.
Crash pads provide:
- Reliable impact absorption
- A stable, predictable landing surface
- Coverage for high-use obstacle areas

Soft-Top Mats for Dynamic Areas
Soft-top landing mats such as Pit Pillows, Marshmallow Mats, and Cloud Mats are ideal for supplementing your crash pads in higher-impact or more dynamic zones.
They work especially well under:
- Lache lanes
- Ring and grip systems
- Warped walls
- High-traffic dismount areas
These mats offer a more forgiving surface that supports safe landings and controlled peel offs while still allowing athletes to stand and reset comfortably. Soft-top or specialty mats are valuable additions, but they should supplement crash pads, not replace them.
Shop Pit Pillows, Marshmallow Mats, and Cloud Mats for extra cushioning in high-impact areas.
Inflatable Mats for Home and Flexible Setups
Inflatable mats have become increasingly popular, particularly for home ninja setups and multi-use spaces. Like any landing system, regular inspection and proper inflation are key.
They provide strong impact absorption when properly inflated, and they’re easy to move and store. Inflatables are a great solution for garages, basements, backyards, or temporary setups, as long as obstacle heights and usage are appropriate for the mat’s design.

Coverage and Placement Matter
It’s not just about what mats you use, it’s about how you use them.
Landing zones should extend beyond the obstacle itself to account for forward momentum, lateral swing, and off-balance landings. Mats should fit tightly together and remain secured during use to eliminate gaps or shifting. Mats with V4 options feature hook-and-loop fasteners on all four sides, allowing for seamless, multi-directional connections to create a larger, more secure landing area.
For taller or more dynamic obstacles, layering crash pads with soft-top mats, such as pit pillows, marshmallow mats and cloud mats, can add additional protection where impact forces are greater. Remember, these soft-top mats are designed for extra cushion and should always be layered over crash pads, but never used as a standalone replacement.
Intentional placement makes a big difference.
Platforms and Smart Dismount Design
Blocks and platforms help athletes transition between obstacles safely and keep courses flowing smoothly.
Padded platforms that butt directly against matting create seamless transitions from obstacle to landing zone. Raised platforms designed to sit over mats offer flexibility in layout while maintaining proper footing.
For beginner athletes, closer and lower dismount platforms reduce unnecessary drops and build confidence. As skill levels increase, platform height and spacing can be adjusted, but surfaces should always be stable and non-slip.
A well-designed dismount area is just as important as the obstacle itself. Explore padded ninja platforms designed for safe dismounts and obstacle transitions.
Padding Beyond the Floor
Landing safety extends beyond mats.
Posts, uprights, columns, and nearby structural elements should be protected with post and column pads. Wall padding is especially important near warped walls, salmon ladders, or any obstacle where momentum carries athletes toward vertical surfaces.
If an athlete can swing into it, fall toward it, or stumble near it, it deserves padding. Shop protective padding to keep athletes safe around your obstacles.
Building Confidence Through Smart Design
A strong landing system does more than reduce injuries. It supports progression.
When athletes feel secure in their environment, they focus on skill development instead of worrying about the fall. Coaches can teach confidently. Parents feel reassured. Training becomes more consistent and sustainable.
Mats, padding, and platforms are not afterthoughts. They are foundational pieces of a well-designed ninja gym. If you’re planning a new space or upgrading your current setup, start with the landing, and build from there.
